TORONTO – The loonie dropped sharply after the Bank of Canada kept its key interest rate target on hold Wednesday, as North American stock markets pulled back on profit taking. The Canadian dollar was trading at an average price of 78.30 cents US, down 0.65 of a cent.“The loonie seems to have had its peak when the Bank of Canada was raising interest rates and the reports of year-over-year economic growth were coming out stronger than people had expected,” said Norman Levine, managing director of Portfolio Management Corp.“Now people are seeing that rates aren’t going to go up as fast in Canada as they were before and that economic growth in Canada will probably be lower next year than it was this year.”The Bank of Canada left its benchmark interest rate unchanged Wednesday following two straight hikes since July in response to the economy’s impressive run over the last four quarters. The central bank warned it expects to stick to its rate-hiking path, although at perhaps a more tentative pace.In its scheduled announcement, the bank said it held off this time in part because it expects the recent strength of the Canadian dollar to slow the rise in the pace of inflation. The move in the loonie Wednesday came as the Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index fell 50.37 points to 15,854.77.South of the border it was also a negative day, with U.S. stocks giving back most of their profits earned Tuesday. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average tumbled 112.30 points to 23,329.46. The S&P 500 index gave back 11.98 points to 2,557.15 and the Nasdaq composite index was down 34.54 points to 6,563.89.“I think in general markets have had the longest run, especially the U.S. markets, without a five per cent correction in recent or longer memory,” said Levine. “It’s not surprising you get some profit taking after some big runs. We keep expecting the five per cent, the 10 per cent correction, but we keep never getting it.”Still, Levine added, while U.S. stocks are at the high-end of historic valuations, “they’re not blowout, stupid valuations.”In commodities news, the December crude contract lost 29 cents to close at US$52.18 per barrel and the December natural gas contract was down five cents at US$3.08 per mmBTU.The December gold contract added 70 cents to US$1,279.00 an ounce and the December copper contract was down two cents to US$3.18 a pound.Follow @DaveHTO on Twitter.
DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – The City of Dawson Creek will be delivering new recycling carts to residents this month.Dawson Creek Council voted in favour of implementing a curbside recycling program in the City earlier this year, making it easier for residents to recycle household items and reduce materials sent to the landfill.“We’ve heard residents ask for curbside recycling, and a majority identified it as a priority during our recent OCP consultation process,” said Mayor Dale Bumstead. “Many Dawson Creek residents are already sorting and recycling their household waste, and the new curbside collection service makes recycling much easier and more convenient, and helps us keep more out of the landfill.” Curbside recycling collection begins the week of September 3rd. Recycling will be picked up every other week, on the same day as garbage collection, which the City says will continue to be picked up every week. The City’s current garbage collection contractor, Waste Management, will also collect curbside recycling.Recyclable materials are placed in the 360-litre recycling cart and set out beside the garbage cart every other week. A printed guide showing accepted materials, how to place carts and a collection calendar is being distributed with the carts.Recyclable materials that are allowed inside the new carts include:household paperhard plastic containers (numbered 1 to 7)foil & metal containersdisposable drink cups & lidsnewspapers & magazinescardboard boxes & boxboardgable top containers & aseptic (“TetraPaks”) cartonsnon-hazardous aerosol cans.Plastic bags, glass and foam packaging are not accepted in recycling carts. In order to save on unnecessary printing, residents are encouraged to download the Dawson Creek app, which is available for Apple and Android devices, and to sign up for schedule reminders on the City’s website. The Waste Wizard app also includes the most up-to-date disposal instructions for hundreds of household materials including items that can be included with curbside garbage and recycling, taken to a recycling depot, or special instructions for hazardous materials. For more information on the recycling program, accepted materials and to find your collection schedule visit www.dawsoncreek.ca/recycle, or download the Dawson Creek app.Missed or problem cart deliveries can be reported to the City of Dawson Creek at 250-784-3600.

Srinagar: A Pakistani terrorist, who was indoctrinated and trained by 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, was arrested from Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said here on Wednesday.Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Mohammad Waqar Awan, who was tasked with reviving militancy in certain areas of the Kashmir valley, was arrested earlier this week and paraded before the media on Wednesday at the Police Control Room. Awan, a resident of Mohalla Miana in Mianwali area of Punjab in Pakistan, was indoctrinated by Lakhvi at his residence in Rawalpindi, officials said. The initial arms training to the Pakistani terrorist was also given by Lakhvi, who along with six others has been charged by the Pakistani authorities with planning and executing the Mumbai attacks in November, 2008 that left 166 people dead. Lakhvi is currently on bail, and the case is moving very slowly. Awan, known by alias of “Chota Dujana , told reporters that before he joined militancy, he was told that atrocities were being inflicted on the people of Kashmir by security forces but he saw no such thing in the Valley. “I received training for four months at a camp in Muzaffarabad. I was told that atrocities are committed on children and women. Prayers are not allowed in mosques and houses of Muslims are destroyed, he told reporters, adding he found that the conditions were different in Kashmir. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’Police officials said Awan’s arrest and “confession” is live evidence for Pakistan as to how youths are manipulated on its soil, prepared for militancy and then sent here to join Jaish-e-Mohammad or Lashkar-e-Taiba. Asked if he was involved in any attacks in the valley, Awan said, I was not involved in any attack.” The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Baramulla, Abdul Qayoom, said Awan had infiltrated into the valley in July 2017. “He was active in Handwara (area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district). For the last about two years, he was active in different places of Srinagar. When he was returning to Baramulla, he was intercepted at a naka (check post). However, the driver of his vehicle rammed it into police vehicle and sped away.
Sophomore guard Cait Craft (13) walks off the court during a timeout in a game against Iowa Jan. 19 at the Schottenstein Center. OSU lost, 81-74.Credit: Ryan Robey / For The LanternThe Ohio State women’s basketball team (12-9, 2-3) is currently on a two-game losing streak, but it has a chance to gain ground in the conference standings by notching a win against Big Ten rival Michigan (13-5, 4-1) Thursday. The Buckeyes are currently tied for seventh in the Big Ten with Indiana, Northwestern and Wisconsin, while the Wolverines are tied for first place with Penn State and in-state rival Michigan State. In the two teams’ first meeting this season, Michigan won against OSU, 64-49, in Columbus Jan. 5, in a game where offense was hard to come by. The Buckeyes only managed 13 first-half points, a performance that coach Kevin McGuff described as “ugly.”“We did not play well offensively,” McGuff said. “They had a good defensive game plan and we did not react well.”The Buckeyes shot just 31.3 percent from the field in the Michigan loss but showed improvement in that category during Sunday’s loss to Iowa, in which they shot 49.2 percent.Despite a better shooting performance against the Hawkeyes, the feeling in the locker room was still one of disappointment, sophomore guard Cait Craft said.“Lately, the games that we keep coming up short in … it is like we are not even there,” Craft said, referring to the team’s tendency to start slow. “To keep coming back and coming up just a little bit short is disappointing for everybody.”Craft’s comments pertained to the Iowa game in particular, since the Buckeyes dug themselves a 17-point hole and spent the entire game trying to catch up, ultimately losing 81-74.Although the team has been getting off to slow starts because of poor shooting, redshirt-junior guard Amy Scullion said she and her teammates need to keep moving forward and not dwell on losses.“You cannot focus on the past and what we have done wrong,” Scullion said. “Coach (McGuff) put in a new offense for us … (and) moving forward, we are going to try to get a lot more dribble penetration.”OSU has seen success when it rebounds effectively and is 10-0 on the season when outrebounding opponents. Consequently, rebounding well against Michigan during Thursday night’s matchup looks to be a focal point for the team.“It is something that we are always conscience of,” McGuff said. “That will be a big deal for us this week.”While the Buckeyes struggled offensively in their first matchup against Michigan, their defense did hold the Wolverines to more than eight points below than their season average of 72.7 points per game.“By and large, that was not the end of the floor that was our biggest issue,” McGuff said of his team’s defense in the earlier loss to Michigan. “We need to find a way to generate more offense.”The Buckeyes are set to tip off at 7 p.m. Thursday against Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Hurricane Jose Not A Threat to The Bahamas, For Now Bahamian music legend gunned down at home in Turks and Caicos Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppNassau, Bahamas, 25 Nov 2014 PRESS RELEASE (DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AVIATION) – The public is advised that the Department of Civil Aviation is now in possession of a Preliminary Report on the Freeport, Grand Bahama aircraft crash which took the lives of nine persons, at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 9th, 2014. The narrative of that report is now being released by that Department. The report was prepared by the Air Accident Investigation and Prevention Unit (AAIPU) of the Department on November 20th, 2014, and it contains specifics on the aircraft and crew, and on the weather conditions and flight details.According to the AAIPU report, both pilots Captain Stanley Thurston, and First Officer Frahkan Cooper were licensed and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, and were in possession of valid first class medical certificates, which were issued in November, 2014. Day instrument meteorological conditions prevailed upon the departure of the aircraft from Odyssey Aviation, and an instrument flight rules flight plan was filed for the 24 minute flight to Freeport. The Preliminary Report has also confirmed that The Bahamas Area Forecast published on November 9th, 2014 by The Bahamas Meteorological Department advised that there was a frontal boundary over the northwest Bahamas and lower, moving over the northern Bahamas.Details provided in the Preliminary Report indicate that the aircraft uploaded 160 gallons of fuel prior to its departure from Odyssey Aviation, was provided with the current weather conditions upon contact with Freeport Air Traffic Control, and was cleared for an instrument approach. However, the aircraft was unable to land in Freeport on its first attempt, due to heavy rain showers and reduced visibility, and the crew therefore executed a missed approach. It was during the return for the second approach, while attempting to visually locate the runway, and following deteriorating weather due to rain and haze, that the aircraft struck a crane in the Grand Bahama shipyard and crashed. The AAIPU is being assisted in its investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, (NTSB) the Federal Aviation Administration, (FAA) and Bombardier, the manufacturer of the aircraft. The team will re-assemble at the NTSB Headquarters in Washington in December, 2014 to continue its investigations.Click HERE to get the AAIPU’s Preliminary Report. Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 05 Aug 2015 – Police believe they are investigating a targeted attack on a 21 year old man, who was shot on the holiday Monday around 9:36pm. The 21 year old was shot in his arm and was treated at the Cheshire Hall Medical Center and is said to be in stable condition now. Although the young man is cooperating with the investigation, Police tell media they still need help in solving this one… the shooting took place near the old Smokey’s on Bay Road in Blue Hills. In another matter: Two were women robbed of their cell phones by a knife wielding duo on around 1am Tuesday. The two women were walking in the area of the down town ball park when they were approached by the men who are described as tall and stocky and short and slim. The suspects took off on foot and despite a reportedly extensive search of the area, the pair was not caught. According to PDM Chairman, Doug Parnell it was an embarrassing scene for the MP and Border Control Minister, Hon Don Hue Gardiner who basically was unfamiliar with the law when he raised his objections. The law says you must be registered in the District to bring an objection. Doug Parnell, PDM National Chairman: “The Hon Donhue Gardiner was not entitled to bring those objections, so we prevailed on that point and we also feel we were given a fair hearing on other persons we claimed or objected to in the district. We are satisfied that the Supervisor of Elections and the team that was with him gave us a fair hearing.”About 40 people turned out to hear the proceedings of the Electors’ Court, Parnell added, “I want to say that I am very pleased at the turn out of persons who were interested in their democracy and the upcoming General Elections, we had a strong force and showing of our supporters in this district; we were very, very grateful to them for coming out; persons like Prince Selver, persons like Curalena Phillips and persons like Paul Higgs.” For various reasons, including that some of the electors were said to be resident outside of the country and outside of the constituency, Gardiner tried to have them removed for the voter’s list but when the PDM reminded the Elections Supervisor that one has to be resident in the constituency for their recommendation to stand, Gardiner’s challenges fell flat. Parnell told Magnetic Media yesterday that PDM challenges were for about 20 people, and were done within the confines of the law; they walked away from that elections court session satisfied, he said. So far Grand Turk North, Grand Turk South & Salt Cay and North and Middle have had their hearings. Next stop we understand is South Caicos.
Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, October 11, 2017 – Nassau – Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. Michael Pintard commended award-winning Bahamian recording artist and producer ‘Sammi Starr’ Poitier for an initiative he’s undertaking that should encourage more Bahamian performers to follow their dreams. The Minister noted: “Sammi Starr is a gifted entertainer who has an incredible voice; he is as effective behind the scenes as a producer and a mentor for emerging performing artists.”“I wanted to meet with the Minister today to discuss working with young entertainers, young artists, and mentoring them and helping them get into music full time,” Sammi said during a recent courtesy call. “You know, give them some encouragement to let them know that there is an opportunity to make it as an entertainer – for income, exposure, and, of course, a lifetime career.”The purpose of meeting with Minister Pintard, Sammi continued, was to see if he could get the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture to be aligned with that vision and support it.“The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture is happy to collaborate with him as we seek to mentor emerging artists, continue to contribute to his success as an artist, and gain from his expertise as we seek to internationalise various genres of the arts,” Minister Pintard said.Sammi shared the stage with international recording artists such as Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Barrington Levy, and Diddy at “Miami’s Best of the Best 2010,” becoming one of the first Bahamians to perform at that concert event – and continuing to do so for more than 4 years. He has also won major talent shows including Charlotte, North Carolina’s “You Got Vocals,” the “2007 Junkanoo Song Competition” in The Bahamas, and the inaugural Music Masters Competition at Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival in 2015 – the latter of which resulted in his landing a recording contract with Sony Music Latin.Sammi also spoke highly of the talent of Bahamian performers. “The talent that we have in The Bahamas is unreal,” he said. “We have talent here that can be on the same stage as world-class entertainers – Grammy-award-winning entertainers. There is no question about it. They just need the exposure.”Sammi encouraged persons who want to work with him to contact him on social media, across various platforms.“This is one of the mandates for the rest of my career; so just get in touch with me,” Sammi said. “We will talk and hear you out about whatever your vision is as an entertainer, a musical artist or just an artist period.“We can talk about it and whatever I could do to help, I will.”Minister Pintard responded, “We believe that more Bahamian artists should contribute to taking our various forms of art internationally, and we are happy that Sammi Starr is committed to working with us in doing just that.”By: Eric Rose (BIS)Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture the Hon. James Martin Mark Zuckerberg takes his privacy very seriously. The Facebook CEO quietly purchased real estate worth $59 million in Lake Tahoe, California, according to a Thursday report by The Wall Street Journal. He reportedly used a limited-liability company named Golden Range, a wealth manager and nondisclosure agreements to purchase two adjacent homes on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The agreements required real-estate agents to keep Zuckerberg’s identity secret and called for online listing pictures of the houses to be taken down, according to the report.Zuckerberg also has properties in San Francisco, Palo Alto and the Hawaiian island of Kauai. The tech billionaire reportedly purchased his first Lake Tahoe property in December for $22 million, and the second for $37 million in January. The lengths Zuckerberg went to keep the deal private come as Facebook grapples with issues around user privacy. The company has been reeling from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which data from as many as 87 million Facebook users was improperly shared with the political consultancy.Zuckerberg’s personal representative declined to comment. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. This uninhabitable house for sale in San Francisco is in such disrepair that potential buyers can’t enter the property, and it comes with a demolition permit. It hit the market in May with a price tag of $2.5 million. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Bay Area residents could get a lot of new wealthy neighbors courtesy of Uber’s IPO.When the ride-hailing company went public earlier this month its current and former employees amassed roughly $3.25 billion in Uber stock — that’s enough money to buy every home for sale in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland, according to real estate brokerage Redfin. And there’d still be half a billion dollars left over.Redfin used Uber’s pre-IPO price of $45 per share to run its numbers. The company’s stock has since fallen below that level and currently changes hands at about $41 per share. The analysis is meant to give a sense of how much wealth has been created by Uber’s IPO and how it might affect the housing market, Redfin’s chief economist, Daryl Fairweather, said in an interview.”This has really put a new jolt into the San Francisco housing market where otherwise it might have stabilized,” Fairweather said. “San Francisco is seeing double-digit price growth, which is pretty remarkable.”San Francisco is the most expensive large housing market in the US, with an average home costing $1.43 million as of April, according to Redfin. The high prices may be good news for existing homeowners, but they’re likely bad news for everyone else who isn’t expecting a Silicon Valley IPO windfall.”San Francisco has been grappling with this increase of prosperity for a long time,” Fairweather said. “This is only going to make the situation worse.”And Uber is only one of several San Francisco-based companies hitting the stock market this year. Lyft and Pinterest have already gone public. And Airbnb and Slack are expected to also have IPOs in 2019.Uber didn’t respond to a request for comment.Redfin calculated the employee value of Uber’s IPO using the company’s global workforce of 22,263 people. It’s unclear how many of those employees live in the Bay Area and work at its San Francisco headquarters. Rough estimates put the number at around 6,000 employees. As far as available homes in the Bay Area, Redfin estimates there are 1,661 homes currently for sale in San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley that are worth a combined total of $2.85 billion. And the 862 homes for sale just in San Francisco are worth $2.1 billion.Fairweather said Redfin has seen a jump in the San Francisco housing market as tech companies have gone public over the past couple of months. Home prices were down at the beginning of this year, she said, but in April they quickly rose.Even if Uber’s stock doesn’t perform well over the next few months, the magnitude of its current $68 billion market capitalization is immense, said Issi Romem, chief economist for real estate website Trulia. But, he added, the worries around what that’ll do to San Francisco’s housing market may be overblown.”Despite being centered in San Francisco, the impact of the IPO is likely to be diffuse throughout the Bay Area,” Romem said. “It will add a substantial new increment to housing demand in the region, but it will not upend the market as some have foreseen.” 0 Tags Post a comment Still, the city’s housing crunch and wealth inequality will likely intensify without a major increase to housing supply, Fairweather said. People who don’t work in the tech industry, like nurses, teachers, nonprofit workers and artists, will continue to move out of San Francisco because it’s become so unaffordable.”It’s the No. 1 city for people who are looking to leave,” Fairweather said, citing Redfin’s migration data. “As affordability becomes more of an issue, that will continue to happen.”Originally published May 21. Copper prices are expected to shoot up amid fears of a shortage of the metal as about 2,500 workers at BHP Billiton’s Escondida mine in Chile are expected to strike on Thursday. Stock markets abuzz with rumours of Axis Bank-Kotak Mahindra Bank mergerThe workers, at the world’s largest copper-mining operation, had last week voted to reject a company wage offer and opted instead to go on strike, which the union has warned could be lengthy. They have alleged that BHP has offered no pay hike and is seeking to cut bonuses for those who take voluntary redundancy, as well as change shift hours. Chile’s copper output dropped by 3.9 percent in 2016, primarily on account of lower production at Escondida and Anglo American Sur mines. The South American country produces about 28 percent of the world’s copper. BHP holds a 57% stake in the Escondida mine, with Rio Tinto and Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. as other major investors. Fearing a strike at the Escondida mine and expectations that it could trigger supply disruptions at other mines as well, prices for the red metal have been trading at an almost 18-month high of $6,000 a tonne. According to US-based brokerage Jefferies, a work stoppage at Escondida will reduce about 25,000 tonnes a week from the global copper market. For 2017, Escondida is purported to produce 1.1 million tonnes of copper, about 5 percent of the world’s total. The operator of the mine, Minera Escondida, said if the strike stretches on, it will stop producing copper as the local labour regulator has designated 80 workers to carry out work such as maintenance. The company has requested the local government to attempt a negotiation, but union officials said they were nowhere closer to a deal. Copper is used in everything from construction to telecommunications.
